Hard work paid off for first-time lawmaker
Peter Silva, for the first time, ran for a seat in the New Hampshire House
of Representatives to represent Wards 5, 8 and 9 in Nashua.
He won the seat and finished fourth overall. What is quite
amazing is he ran on the Republican side, and the ballot was very much
tilted to the Democrat side.
For the last two months, he and his "helpers,"
family and friends, went door to door, and every morning and eve were
on the street corners with name signs greeting people going to and from
work.
It is nice to know the voters picked him because of his
hard work and political knowledge instead of a party.
Then, on Nov. 5, he and his helpers were back on the street
holding signs. Under his name there was a message that simply said: "Thank
You."
That is a touch of class, and I feel good because I voted
for him.

Peter Silva on the Issues
HB 383
Dear Guy,
I am well aware that seatbelts save lives. My family and I buckle up every
time we get into a car. However, when I was elected I promised myself
and my constituents that I would represent them. The overwhelming response
I received on house bill 383 was in opposition. The main reason for this
was not to ignore the dangers of riding in a car without wearing a seatbelt,
but to be able to make a FREE choice and not have the government make
it for you. This bill proposed allows police to pull you over because
they see you're not wearing your seatbelt. In Massachusetts police can
only pull you over for another violation. If they see that you're not
wearing a seatbelt they can only ticket you then. Currently, our state
is in a severe financial crisis and bill 383 is looked at by many as being
a huge moneymaker. I'm all for severe penalties for people who choose
not to wear their seatbelt and get into an accident. As I'm sure you're
aware we currently have seatbelt laws to protect our children. The most
common response I received on house bill 383 was, whatever happened "live
free or die". Most peoples concern is of New Hampshire becoming a
"nanny state". In short, I wish I was able to agree with every
constituent on every issue, unfortunately, if I am to serve our district
openly and honestly that's not possible. I hope we can agree on most every
other issue facing our great state. In closing I can't tell you how important
it is for people like yourself to stay involved with your local and state
government. Whether we agree or not, this is how we can keep our state
going in the right direction. Thank you once again for getting involved.
Sincerely,
Pete Silva
